October 12th, 2009 ALDS Series 1, Game 4

The New York Yankees advanced to the ALCS in convincing fashion, pounding Tigers starter Jerrod Washburn for five runs. Detroit did not go down without a fight, posting 4 runs in the 9th, including a 2 run homer off Yankee closer and Cy Young winner Mariano Rivera. In the end, however, the Tigers pitching proved inadequate to the task of taming the powerful Yankees' offense.

Hideki Matsui went deep and had 3 RBI as the New York (AL) Yankees outscored
the Detroit Tigers 9 to 6.

New York (AL) had 3 runs cross the plate in the top of the 2nd inning. The
big moment was provided by Matsui who deflated the mood of the partisan fans
when he lofted a three-run 'big-fly'. The New York (AL) offense poured it
on, scoring in 7 of the 9 innings.

The win was credited to Joba Chamberlain(1-0) who went 5 and 2/3 innings
allowing 2 runs. Jarrod Washburn(0-1) was the loser. He was touched for 3
homeruns in his 3 innings of work.
