| The New York Yankees continued their dominant ways as the playoffs opened today in New York. C.C. Sabathia was dominant, allowing only 3 hits and 1 run in 7 1/3 innings. Home runs by Mark Texiera and Hideck Matsui gave the Bronx Bombers enough of a cushion that AL Cy Young winner Mariano Rivera could take the afternoon off. With 4 hits each, the Yankees 1B and DH provided all of the Yankees' offense. Brandon Inge's two hits were the Tigers' only notable performance all day. |

WEB GEMS- Top 5th: Johnny Damon robbed Marcus Thames of a Homerun!
Mark Teixeira launched 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and C.C. Sabathia pitched 7
and one third strong innings as the New York (AL) Yankees topped the Detroit
Tigers by a score of 7 to 1 at Yankee Stadium.
The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by Teixeira. He slapped a single in the 1st inning, lofted a
three-run bomb in the 3rd inning, banged out a one-base hit in the 5th inning
and smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the 7th inning. Overall New York
(AL) out-hit Detroit 9 to 4.
The win went to Sabathia(1-0) who allowed 1 run in 7 and 1/3 innings. Rick
Porcello(0-1) was given the loss. Teixeira was in a good mood after the
game, 'I'm just seeing and hitting the ball real well now. I made some
adjustments last week and they are paying off. That's what this game is
about. making adjustments as the season goes along.'
